Internet Marketing – The Importance of the List

By now you have probably heard a bit about the methods used by the internet marketing ‘gurus’ and how they get traffic to their site, and make their killer copy so good at enticing customers into pulling out their wallets and buying any product that it’s almost like magic.

Well, it doesn’t always happen like that of course. So what happens when customers don’t buy from you on the first visit? You hopefully get their email address and name, so you can have a shot at pitching your product(s) to them another day!

That’s where building a list comes into play, and you should definitely work at getting good at this skill because without it, you won’t be successful online. Why? First of all, what’s the sense of getting all that traffic to your site if you aren’t going do anything with it?

If even a small percentage of the folks signup for your “special report” or free newsletter, you know they’re interested in what you have to say already. So these are your prime customers! Treat them well and they may become lifelong customers, coming back again and again to your site for the great content and updates.

So what are the basics of building a list? First you have to have a tool to build a list with, such as an account at AWeber or some other email marketing/auto-responder software site. There are a few out there, so check around if you want the best deal. Most are pretty easy to get setup, just get an account and start setting up automatic messages to send to customers that signup for your list. Why would they do this?

You have to decide what you are willing to send, either a one-time report that you created or a continuing newsletter. I would recommend a continuing newsletter of some kind, so they are used to getting emails from you. And the great thing is you can include subtle sales pitches for your products (or other affiliate products) in your emails, along with the great content you are sending them.

What great content you say? Ok, here’s where the work comes in. You do have to put some thought into what to send your customers, but that shouldn’t be hard since you’re already writing articles that relate to your product, right? Just tweak a few of those, put in some friendly banter to soften up your customers and let them know you are there to help, and you will do fine. Just remember these newsletters are for building customer relations, not hard selling. Some marketers don’t get that straight until it’s too late and lose most of their customers. You should treat the people that signup for your newsletter as friends, not just potential customers.

That way they will be more open to listening to what you have to say, as a friend. This is how you build trust! And if you want to remain in this business for a long time, make lots of friends and money too, you must build a good reputation online. After awhile you will be amazed at how big your list has grown, and you will be able to create new products that they will be perfect candidates to buy from you, since they already know and trust you.

There are some great ways to build your list, but the best way is to create a “squeeze page” that is nothing but a signup page for your report or newsletter, with a nice juicy offer that they can’t resist! Such as a free bonus for signing up, of course. These days people tend to expect something for free, so give it to them and you will tons of people on your list in no time. Need traffic to your squeeze page?

No problem, just write a bunch of articles with a link to your squeeze page, or use PPC for awhile to build it much faster. After all you will make money from it, right? You will if you play your cards right, and build that list! So get out there and get started today.
